Kampot |
A
quaint and much older small town ambiance with French
colonial and Chinese architecture.
A charming little town by a scenic river with plenty
of surrounding natural attractions : mountains, waterfalls,
beaches, hill resort, caves. Previously
Kampot was a stepping-stone to Bokor and Kep. You
can reach Kampot by irregular plane service from Phnom
Penh. It’s not advisable to get there by car.
It takes about 5 hours to cover the 150 km from Phnom
Penh to Kampot. From Sihanoukville it’s 105
km to Kampot by a jumping and dirt road. The train
from Phnom Penh to Kampot takes seven hours.
Across the river are the Elephant
Mountains and Mount Bokor, atop which lies a French
ghost town. Southeast is Kep, a beach resort that
was once the playground of Cambodia's rich and powerful
and is now reclaiming that glamour. And all around
Kampot are swimming holes and limestone caves for
intrepid amateur spelunkers. Matt
Dillon used it as a set in his 2002 film "City
of Ghosts." The annual New Year's Eve party there
drew 500 expatriates and Cambodians last December.
