Kampong
Thom |
The
second largest province in Cambodia. Located 162km,
north of Phnom Penh Capital on the way of RN6 to Siem
Reap Angkor. Kompong Thom is one of the five provinces
surrounding Tonle Sap Lake.
If you are traveling on the arduous road between Phnom
Penh and Siem Reap, it is a pleasant place to break
the journey for a night and is a good base from which
to explore the pre-Angkorian chenla capital of Sambor
Prey Kuk and the hill-top temple of Phnom Suntonk.
It is another sleepy provincial capital, but the proximity
of Sambor Prey Kuk makes it a more rewarding stop
than many of the others.
Kampong Thom is starting to draw more visitors thanks
to the pre-Angkorian temples of Sambor Prei Kuk and
other lesser-known Angkorian sites. During the time
of the French, it was home to a large inrity group
called the Stieng, but they have long been estimated
into Cambodian society. Farming and fishing are mainstay
of the population, Stung Sen widing its way through
the province and into the Tonle Sap River in western
Kampong Thom.
